1. Introduction

The VIltrox AF 50 mm f/1.4 Pro was launched in October 2025 but only as a Sony FE version. For the Nikon Z version, we had to wait a bit longer, till February 2026.

Viltrox AF 50 mm f/1.4 Pro - Introduction

Encouraged by a very good result in our tests of the Viltrox AF 85 mm f/1.4 Pro, we were sure we would like to test its 50 mm brother. Still, we decided to wait till the Nikon Z version was available and for two reasons.

Firstly, there are not many Nikon Z lenses tests available on our website, so we are still not sure about levels of resolution records possible to achieve. As the Sony FE Viltrox AF 85 mm f/1.4 almost was able to enter a podium of record breakers even if it faced a much more fierce competition, we speculated that the Viltrox AF 50 mm f/1.4 Pro would be able to do the same as the Nikon Z version.

Viltrox AF 50 mm f/1.4 Pro - Introduction

Secondly, we are fully aware of the court battle between Nikon and Viltrox that has been in progress for some time now. Of course it's difficult to predict its result, but if Viltrox loses, it might be the last moment when we get an opportunity to test lenses of this Chinese manufacturer that can be joined with our editorial specimen of the Nikon Z8.

We borrowed the Viltrox lens for our tests courtesy of  Foto Technika, a company from Gdansk and a Viltrox distributor for Poland; we are very grateful for their friendly cooperation.
