1. Introduction

Before 2008 the Korean Samyang company was mainly known on the CCTV market and as a producer of cheap, manual telephoto lenses, both classical and catadioptric system (using mirror). Those T-mount lenses could be attached to a reflex camera of your choice with the help of an appropriate adapter.

Near the end of 2008 the company went one step further, launching the Samyang 85 mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF. The device was still manual but apart from that it looked every bit like a contemporary photographic lens with good parameters. During next several years Samyang have assembled a very solid line-up of manual lenses designed for both reflex cameras and mirrorless cameras. Most of them is characterized by a very good price quality ratio and some among them proved to be real jewels, able to compete on equal terms with even the best rivals.

In May 2016 Samyang took another step by announcing the launch of the Samyang AF 14 mm f/2.8 FE and the AF 50 mm f/1.4 FE with the autofocus mechanism. The lenses are both E/FE devices so only the owners of Sony mirrorless cameras have been able to enjoy that functionality so far. Still we hope that it’s just the first move in that direction and soon we’ll be able to get Samyangs with autofocus on other mounts as well. Now in the following chapters we are presenting our impressions after testing the Samyang AF 50 mm f/1.4 FE – enjoy your lecture!
