5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

Every fast lens which, additionally, provides a shallow depth of field, is susceptible to longitudinal chromatic aberration. Constructors of such an optical path have to make sure that the aberration will be corrected properly well. The Sony optics specialists rose to the occasion so the Sony FE 135 mm f/1.8 GM doesn't experience any problems in this area.

Lateral chromatic aberration can be described in similar terms – its graph with values depending on apertures we show below.

The graph remains more or less flat for both types of detectors keeping close to a level of 0.03%. It is a negligible value so this aberration shouldn't bother you at all.

Spherical aberration

First photos of this chapter don't feature any traces of focus shift effect even if you examine them very closely. Still, some symptoms of less-than-ideal correction of spherical aberration are visible in circles of light we got before and behind the focus. In the first case you see slightly soft edges and in the second – a slightly accented rim but both these features aren't especially pronounced.

Lack of focus shift and a good image quality in the frame centre by f/1.8 prove that problems with spherical aberration, even if existing, can't be called bothersome or noticeable.
