In September 2008, during the Photokina fair, we found out that Sigma was going to launch a new lens on the market, which would be, according to the company’s intentions, a standard companion for full frame digital reflex cameras.

The decision to launch such a lens seems to be very sensible indeed. Digital full frame cameras are here to stay for good, as they are used not only by the professionals but also by many advanced amateur photographers. Practically they all are very keen on having a standard and journalistic f/2.8 zoom. It’s true that Sigma has already had an instrument of identical parameters in offer (we’ve even tested it), but it was an old, analog cameras design and it couldn’t meet the requirements of modern digital reflex cameras.

The competition for customers in this market sector is fierce but there’s a lot at stake – the lenses with such parameters are not the cheapest, after all. Nikkor and Sony/Zeiss are the leaders here. Their lenses got very high notes in our tests but their manufacturers don’t hesitate to demand a lot of money for the high quality they offer. Canon lags behind a bit here because its design is much older than the Nikon or Sony system lenses. Sigma, true to its own style, tries to cut a piece of the cake for itself. Its lens is supposed to be about two times cheaper and have comparable optical and mechanical properties. Will they succeed? We hope to find out courtesy of the K-Consult company, which was kind enough to lend us the lens for tests. We invite you to read the next chapters.
