1. Introduction

In 2000 took place a launch of a very original Sigma lens. It was a huge surprise for the photographic market and we think here of the Sigma 50-500 mm f/4-6.3 DG EX APO RF HSM, the first 10 x optical zoom hyper-telephoto instrument. Since that time the lens has found a huge group of fans and gained a nickname 'Bigma'.

The second version of the Bigma, the 50-500 mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM model, appeared in 2010 and, apart from a better optical construction, offered also an optical image stabilization unit.

In September 2018 Sigma went one step further and showed the S 60-600 mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM, also with 10x zoom factor but with even better utility. The change of the shorter focal length from 50 to 60 mm is practically no fault at all and lengthening the maximum focal length from 500 to 600 mm is a huge asset. As a resut the newest 'Bigma' was an excellent piece of equipment, perfect for spotters and/or wildlife photographers. It managed to combine versatility, very large focal range, and excellent image quality with quite sensible price that, in the moment of its launch, reached about 8500 PLN.

Sigma S 60-600 mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS – first impressions - Introduction

To be honest, at some point I decided to buy it myself. I've been an amateur wildlife photographer and a stroller for many years, and the Sigma S 60-600 mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM quickly became my faithful sidekick. Some examples of shots, taken by yours truly, can be found at the end of this chapter.

In January 2023 Sigma did a most natural move – the newest Bigma was released as Sony FE and L-mount version. You should emphasize the fact that it is not an old, reflex-camera construction just adapted to a new mount; you deal here with a brand new optical system; all the instrument was optimized when it comes to physical dimensions and weight. As a result, despite two elements more inside, the new model weighs over 200 grams less than its reflex camera predecessor.

Courtesy of the Polish Sigma representative, K-Consult, the new Sigma S 60-600 mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM was sent to our editorial office several days before its official launch so we got some time to handle and play with it. Our impressions now we share in the following chapters, with several sample shots – enjoy!
