In March 2009 Sigma released a new lens – Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM. I must admit I was surprised about this novelty and the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw its parameters was: “what for?”. Sigma has two quite good lenses in its offer, which overlap the range and brightness of the new lens. I’m talking about Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro and Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro. At the first glance it looks like they utilize the range of possibilities. If someone cares about universality they’ll take the cheaper Sigma 17-70 mm with worse light, but good Macro function. If they want brightness, they’ll go for the 18-50 mm model with constant maximum aperture of f/2.8.

When we take a close look at the new lens, its premiere doesn’t seem to be purposeless anymore (which still doesn’t change the fact that I’d rather see a premiere of something of 15-50 mm parameters). It does have a few advantages and may sell well. The first advantage is the price. Right when it appeared on the market it cost just as much as Sigma 17-70 mm. With time it should become cheaper, so be a lens addressed to people who want to exchange their plastic kit lens for something better. Apart from the price, the lens will also lure potential buyers with image stabilization (OS) and HSM motor (in the case of 17-70 mm and 18-50 f/2.8 only Nikon owners can have it now), and also a close construction with internal focusing. These are major advantages and every person that wants to change their kit lens to something better will take buying the new Sigma into consideration.
