3. Build quality

The parameters of the lens indicate that we will have to do with a solid 'piece of glass'. The active diameter of the front element is 60.7 mm, so the lens cannot be small. Obviously it is not. The solidity of build quality, tasteful smooth black metal casing, metal bayonet, comfortable manual focusing ring, readable scale – everything as it should be and as we expect in the instance of a company of such a great tradition in the production of excellent optics. If we really want to find something to complain, it is the changeable dimension of the lens when focusing. In the transition from the infinity to minimum focus distance of 0.85 meter, the front arrangement of the elements moves forward quite significantly. When using for a long time it may cause sucking dust and dirt into the inside of the arrangement.

As far as internal construction is concerned, Planar 1.4/85 comprises of 8 elements set in 7 groups. Moreover, there is a 6 blade circular diaphragm, which is to provide beautiful appearance of out-of-focus areas (so called bokeh). There is also a filter thread of 72 mm diameter near the front element. The buyer also obtains a lens hood in the set.
