Our first M mount lens test concerned a Summicron- M 50 mm f/2.0 model so a full frame standard and classic device. By and large every full frame camera owner which treats his or her hobby seriously should have that type of lens in their arsenal. Another lens that attracts our attention when we own a rangefinder or a full frame reflex camera is a tolerably wide angle lens. According to your tastes and financial possibilities you can choose from instruments with focal length ranging from 24 to 35 mm and aperture from f/1.4 to f/2.8. In the middle of both ranges can be placed a 28 mm f/2.0 model. On full frame it is already a decent wide angle offering 75-degree diagonal field of view and quite interesting f/2.0 aperture at the same time.

We wish we could add that these in-between parameters are matched by equally moderate price but in the case of Leica it is not true – the price of the Summicron-M 28 mm f/2.0 Asph model exceeds 4000 $. If we want to buy a cheaper wide angle device we must make do with a slower by one stop but two times less expensive Elmarit or look for some other lens offered by Leica’s competitors.

Let’s check, then, what we could get for a price many people would consider simply astronomically high - the Summicron’s 28 mm f/2.0 performance is fully discussed in the following chapters.

The lens was lent to us by LeicaStore.pl.
