The picture resolution of this lens was tested in RAW formats from a Canon 20D camera. We compared the lens’s results with the three other lenses already tested by us in the same price range: the Canon 100-300 mm USM, Sigma 70-300 mm APO and Tamron 70-300 mm.

The chart below shows us the MTF50 dependence from the value of the diaphragm as measured in the middle of the frame.

We have to admit that the results are amazingly good! The performance at the maximum aperture is obviously mediocre. It is also apparent for this lens class that the good picture at the 300 mm focal length can only be obtained at f/11. We were taken by surprise, however, by the 90-135 mm performance, which was terrific! The lens’s picture resolution results are better than the Sigma and the Tamron and only the more expensive and better quality Canon 100-300 mm can compete with the tested lens in this category.

The picture below shows the performance at the edge of the frame.

And again we have the impression that we are working with a high quality lens. The Canon’s performance at 90-135 mm for all the diaphragms is fantastic! It becomes average at 200 mm and weak at 300 mm, which is typical for this lens class, but the EF 90-300 mm is certainly no weaker than other lenses of similar price.

At the end of this category we present the lens’s performance in enhanced JPG format using neutral settings (Parameters 2).
