Cons: Heavy and physically big - no compromise for weight to size. Not by any means an "amateur" lens - this was and is a stable Nikkor-mount photojournalism lens designed to take a beating.
Pros: Extremely sharp, even wide open across its whole range. By f4, 200mm is really spectacular - or frame-filling portraits, it's almost too sharp for most faces - will reveal every pore, micro-acne scar and facial fuzz. While focus may not be as fast as the most modern lenses, it is fast enough to track college football when shot from the sidelines. It survived being hit by two 200-plus pound linemen with just a minor mount twisting that cost less than $300 to replace.
Summary: Today, I use this lens on a Sony A7II focused with the new TechArt Pro autofocus adapter, using a Leicaist Nikkor-to-M adapter. I just shot the speakers and students at an international symposium, both hand-holding and with a monopod - all at f2.8-f4, and missed no shots over 2 days. This is a workhorse lens, not some prissy amateur walk-around variable-aperture plastic lightweight. You carry this to an assignment, shoot it, and put it back in your trunk - knowing your shots will all be sharp and contrasty.

Cons: - heavy!
Pros: - optical quality! It is damn sharp - has a great Bokeh - f/2.8
Summary: I bought it together with a tripod adaptor, so now I can use this lens for almost any purpose. It sure is heavy, but it delivers great quality. The quality at f/2.8 is good and it gets even better when you stop it down.

Cons: Slow AF on non-pro bodies. No VR. Heavy.
Pros: Great image quality, fast aperture. Good bokeh for portrait use. Low cost compared to newer lenses (still available new).
Summary: A great lens if you have a pro-body, for half the price of a 70-200 AFS.

Cons: Very very heavy. It is difficult to take sharp images due to the constant shaking, a result of having to deal with the massive1.3kg. The AF is not as fast as the one bundled with AF-S lenses but it is enough to me (not a sport or bird shooter). The focus limiter button popped out during the use, it turned out that nikon does not use screws to fixate them, they use glue!! My specimen has a huge amount of lateral CAs, I think that it is a flaw of my lens (only).
Pros: Excelent sharpness in the center, very good in the borders, f/2.8 alows good use of DOF. Very Good metal construction (the apperture ring, in my opinion, could be made of metal instead of a cheap looking plastic).
Summary: Very good quality/price ratio, top quality image, good construction but dificult to use due to the massive weight.

Cons: very heavy. "Pump" model cannot receive tripod collar. AF (on pump model) is not very fast, and a bit noisy.
Pros: Fast lens, very high optical quality at least in 80-135mm range, a bit less, maybe, under certain conditions (200mm, corners at short distance) but still very good. Excellent lens for portrait (good "bokeh"). Maybe the sharpest lens I have ever experienced around 135mm.
Summary: I have bought the "pump" zoom version (older, same optical formula). Looks like new - and indestructible. My favorite portrait lens, also good at many other things.

Cons: AF's not a rocket ship, but on a D300 no slouch either! That's all mind.
Pros: Lovely optics, build quality.
Summary: Love this lens, sharp @ f/2.8, great bokeh, accurate AF. Great value. Would love the AF-S version which is meant to be better but cannot justify the significant additional investment for just faster AF.

Cons: AF is kind of slow. Would be nice with the AF-S version
Pros: Excellent optical performance and build quality. Nice and creamy bokeh
Summary: Great lens that could be a bargain if you find a good sample as second-hand.
