A complex optical construction and a big front element are not exactly assets when it comes to damping down flares. The Nikkor fared pretty well though, especially at the wide angle where the flares were not easy to catch and even if you managed to get them they were neither big nor intense. After increasing the focal length we observed a bit more flares but the situations when you have to put the source of bright light inside the frame or close to its corners became rarer at that point.
