1. Introduction

Telephoto zoom lenses which focal length ends near 500 mm have been the domain of independent producers for many years. Even in the era of dominance of analogue photography, in 1996, Sigma presented the 170-500 mm f/5-6.3 APO DG Aspherical model. In the case of Tamron you have to get back in time even further. An autofocus lens so the Tamron AF 200–500 mm f/5–6.3 Di LD (IF), was launched after the Sigma device but in the 80s and 90s of the twentieth century Tamron offered several manual versions of the Adaptall 200-500 mm devices.

In the following years Sigma showed two versions of the ‘Bigma’ (so the 50-500 mm model) and the 150-500 mm f/5.0-6.3 APO DG OS HSM.

Big brands have been rather unwilling to enter that segment. Canon and Sony haven’t offered similar constructions to this day. Pentax, as usual, chose their own way and suggested something in-between so the Pentax D HD FA 150-450 mm f/4.5-5.6 ED DC AW. Only Nikon decided to accept the challenge of Sigma and Tamron – in 2015 they launched the Nikkor AF-S 200-500 mm f/5.6E ED VR.
