1. Introduction

I admit it freely, I am fond of APS-C/DX lenses which focal range starts from 15-17 mm and ends at 70-85 mm. Almost always I find them optically and mechanically better than classic kit 18-55 mm devices, and also smaller, physically lightweight and more universal than 17-55 mm f/2.8 instruments.

In that class of lenses you can find such well-put-together models as the Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16–80 mm f/3.5–4.5, the Canon EF-S 15–85 mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM, or several versions of the Sigma 17–70 mm with the latest version so the Sigma C 17–70 mm f/2.8–4.0 DC Macro OS HSM - all of them we have assessed very positively in our tests. Of course there were also lenses which we've criticized a bit – for example the Nikkor AF-S DX 16–80 mm f/2.8–4E ED VR.

I was really happy when the Fujifilm company announced the launch of the Fujinon XF 16-80 mm f/4 OIS WR and, for obvious reasons, I hoped that lens would be among the best instruments of this class. Did my wishes come true? Let's find out while reading the following chapters of our test.

The test was made before the Ver. 1.02 firmware release. However it will not affect our determination of MTFs, chromatic and spherical aberrations, coma, astigmatism, ghosting and flares and also distortion and vignetting computed on RAW files.

Courtesy of the Fujifilm Polska company that interesting optical instrument found its way to our editorial office pretty quickly and now we are presenting its full test in the following chapters – enjoy your reading!

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
