1. Introduction

Usually new systems are launched on the market with a kit lens and that term might be understood very widely. It encompasses both very cheap 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 instruments, designed for APS-C/DX sensors but also high quality models like the Canon EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM. These two types of kit lenses have been added to sets with different cameras and have become very popular among customers.

That's why we have no problem whatsoever with calling the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/4 S a classic kit lens; it appeared on the market in August 2018 with the new full frame mirrorless Nikon Z system. Still you might start doubting the 'kit lens' label when you look at the price of the new Nikkor - currently it amounts to almost $1000. Of course it should be mentioned that, profiting from different bargain purchases like 'cashback', you can buy this lens cheaper. Of course if you decide to buy it along with the Z6 or the Z7 body the extra charge is reduced to something around $600.

You might complain about the price but in fact it is not much different from prices of the rivals. For the reflex camera Canon EF 24-70 mm f/4L IS USM you have to pay a similar sum of money and the same can be said about the Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 24–70 mm f/4 ZA OSS, designed for mirrorless cameras.

However, talking about prices doesn't make sense as long as you don't know how the lens performs so we ordered it for testing purposes and assessed its optical and mechanical properties – the result of our work you can find in next chapter. We would like to thank the Nikon company for lending us one specimen of the tested lens.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
