Sony FE 50 mm f/2.5 G

29 March 2021

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Thumbnails below show that the Sony FE 50 mm f/2.5 G doesn't have any problems connected to coma. At the smaller APS-C sensor that aberration is corrected in a perfect way; in the corners of full frame you can notice more coma-related effects but still their influence remains low. In fact, only at the maximum relative aperture you can notice slight 'moustache' starting from the point-like image of a diode.

The performance in this category is noticeably better than the performance of both, the Sonnar 1.8/55 and the Sony FE 1.8/50.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 2.6 %. It is a very low level so you can say the Sony won't experience any problems in this category.

Defocused circles of light look sensibly well. Defocused circles of light show effects of employing aspherical elements – they feature slight onion-ring structure. Mechanical vignetting is very strong by f/2.5 but, fortunately, it disappears completely on stopping down the aperture by 2 EV.
