7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

With such a fast lens we expected problems related to coma and aberrations of higher degree that might influence point-like images of light. We weren't wrong. You don't deal here with classic coma but rather a sagittal component of diagonal spherical aberration that is responsible for the length of side wings and, in the case of the Argus, these are especially large. Fortunately that aberration decreases significantly on stopping down the aperture to f/1.4 but it remains noticeable even there.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 22.5% and it is a lot. It's worth noticing that the biggest problems can be spotted by f/0.95 and f/1.1. From f/1.4 onwards the astigmatism level becomes low.

Defocused circles of light look very sensible. The spread is even, with barely accented onion-ring bokeh structure. You also cannot notice any bright rims. Mechanical vignetting is a problem for a change, as it remains visible even on stopping down the aperture by 2 EV.
