70-200 mm class lenses have often experienced a lot of problems with the performance against bright light. Their optical construction is quite complex and their front element – rather big. What's more, it doesn't hide inside the barrel almost at all. Some older constructions of that type could generate so many light artifacts of different types that sometimes I have called them 'kaleidoscopes'.
Fortunately the Nikkor Z 70–200 mm f/2.8 S can be positioned at the other end of the spectrum – new Nano Crystal Coat, ARNEO coatings, and a proper design of the interior of the tube cooperate well and limit efficiently the number of flares. The lens is also able to keep a high contrast of images so in this category the tested lens should only be praised.
