Cons: Manual Focus, 122mm front filter thread (make sure it's included), Front heavy - need a good tripod and heavy duty ballhead, Requires a monopod if being held for any extended time.

Pros: Very, very Sharp, Bokeh is excellent, Fast 3.5 aperture, Much cheaper and lighter than the latest 2.8 version, I can be hand hold at 1/200 with good results, Coupled with a modified TC-16a to get auto focus at f5.6, Build like a tank - will last a lifetime or two.

Summary: My favorite portrait lens. It's especially good for head shots (also own 85, 70-200 vrii). Backgrounds turn to mush. Fun for wildlife as well. Takes some focus skill/luck for sports, but it can get some great indoor shots. I use the TC-16a for sports. This 400mm is a bargain and pairs well with my D600.
