4. Image resolution

Typical 70-300 mm lens results in this category are average to good at the 70-200 mm range and weak at 300 mm. How are Sigma's results in the picture resolution category? They are much better. At 100 mm it is almost perfect with its MTF50 of 40lpmm for the open aperture, while at f/5.6 it is even higher. This is rarely achieved, even by some expensive fixed focal length lenses.

The Sigma 100-300 mm does have some picture resolution drop when the focal length increases, but the drop is very small. The results at 300 mm are still very good and allow it to achieve pictures of very good resolution, even with an open aperture.

As far as the results at the edges of the frame are concerned, the Sigma, again, performs very well. At 100-200 mm the results remind us of a high class fixed focal length lens. The situation at 300 mm is a bit weaker and the results are only mediocre.

To sum it up, the Sigma can be considered one of the best verifocal lenses on the market.
