Cons: The construction would be indeed very nice if Nikon didn’t choose to use a duo-cam system, system that is a constant source of wobbling, I am afraid of breaking the lens every time I attach or detach the Lens Hood. The slow aperture is a downside too, and the heavy distortions on the wide side of the lens bother a bit too (but I don’t know if the other lenses in this class are better in this area)
Pros: The good side of the construction is: The plastic feels nice (good quality); there is a rubber sealing on the mount; you can use the MF without having to change any lever and the AF is really fast, precise and noiseless. Another important fact is that it is a very portable lens. The optics are excellent, very sharp images and normal CAs. Sometimes I have experienced some vignetting, but nothing to worry about.
Summary: It is an affordable lens, with pro performance in optics (apart form the slow f/3.5 max aperture) and some very interesting features. It is also light and resistant, if you take good care of the fragile duo-cam system.

Cons: It is a kit. After almost 6 years of using this it looks crappy and makes clunky noises. Zoom and af rings has lost its nice resistance, but it survived a lot and still makes good photos.
Pros: Very sharp @5.6. It is a good lens. Not only as per for kit lens. It is generally a good lens. I had it for several trips: -20 Celsius (Polish winter) up to +45 (Shara) I used to carry it all the time (no longer since my preferences changed) but I still use it ocassionally.
Summary: At the firs look it seems to be more solid than regular kit lens. it's true. It's zoom construction is very delicate and after heavy usage some out of axis defects prone, but it still remains fully usable DX lens
