Cons: No VR!
Pros: This is a very sharp lens.
Summary: Got this lens once I jumped to Nikon from Canon n Olympus. This lens performed more than I expected it to be! It is sharp, fast and accurate! The only down side, no VR ! If this lens has got VR with it, I think it is 1 of the almost-perfect lens ever in Nikon's line up! Bravo Nikon...bravo!

Cons: Mediocre image quality on modern digital cameras, highly overrated lens.
Pros: Better-built compared to cheaper kit lenses, inexpensive if bought second-hand
Summary: This lens is highly rated as a low-cost alternative to cheaper kit lenses, but despite a better build quality, the image quality is not very good

Cons: Not ideal for modern D-SLR bodies, sharpness not ideal for 10-16 MPx, vignetting, focusing problems at wide end and short distances.
Pros: This lens was ideal lens for D70 and D50, but now it is the history of the honour. Very fast focusing, extremly low CA.
Summary: History of honour for 6 MPx bodies.

Cons: useless light shield, generating 4 dark corners in all photos. Lack of VR system. Construction would be better.
Pros: excellent image sharpness across all focal range, in the center of the frame. Borders are more softer. Good work against bright light, efficient and silent AF, useful 18-70mm focal range for DX cameras. Very bright too, f4.5 at 70mm. Very accurate diaphram.
Summary: This will be a perfect lens with VR system. It's curious that Nikon doesn't offer a mid-range standard zoom for DX format. It has cheap lenses like 18-55 and 18-105, passing to double-priced 16-85. Personally don't understand why Nikon doesn't sale anymore the 18-70

Cons: The construction would be indeed very nice if Nikon didn’t choose to use a duo-cam system, system that is a constant source of wobbling, I am afraid of breaking the lens every time I attach or detach the Lens Hood. The slow aperture is a downside too, and the heavy distortions on the wide side of the lens bother a bit too (but I don’t know if the other lenses in this class are better in this area)
Pros: The good side of the construction is: The plastic feels nice (good quality); there is a rubber sealing on the mount; you can use the MF without having to change any lever and the AF is really fast, precise and noiseless. Another important fact is that it is a very portable lens. The optics are excellent, very sharp images and normal CAs. Sometimes I have experienced some vignetting, but nothing to worry about.
Summary: It is an affordable lens, with pro performance in optics (apart form the slow f/3.5 max aperture) and some very interesting features. It is also light and resistant, if you take good care of the fragile duo-cam system.

Cons: It is a kit. After almost 6 years of using this it looks crappy and makes clunky noises. Zoom and af rings has lost its nice resistance, but it survived a lot and still makes good photos.
Pros: Very sharp @5.6. It is a good lens. Not only as per for kit lens. It is generally a good lens. I had it for several trips: -20 Celsius (Polish winter) up to +45 (Shara) I used to carry it all the time (no longer since my preferences changed) but I still use it ocassionally.
Summary: At the firs look it seems to be more solid than regular kit lens. it's true. It's zoom construction is very delicate and after heavy usage some out of axis defects prone, but it still remains fully usable DX lens
