Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S II

1. Introduction

The first 24-70 lens with the 24-70 focal range appeared in the Nikon Z system at the same time as its launch. It was the affordable Nikkor 24-70 mm f/4 S added to first full frame mirrorless cameras as a kit lens.

Still, it is known that no serious system can make do without classic journalistic parameters such as 24-70 mm joined with fixed f/2.8 aperture. Such a lens appeared six months after the launch of the whole system, in February 2019. It was the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm f/2.8 S we've had an opportunity to test and we spoke highly of it.

Seven years passed and the rivals of the Nikkor have been very active. In August 2025 Nikon decided to launch its successor. The new model is noticeably lighter, its filter diameter is lower, there are more aperture blades and its minimum focusing distance has been shortened.

When it comes to physical dimensions, the new lens is narrower and longer than its predecessor. Why? The new version features a closed construction and preserves its dimensions regardless of the focal length you apply. It's a huge asset – the lens is even better protected against harsh weather and difficult conditions, a significant feature for professional photographers. Also video fans will be happy - the internal change of focal length means less shifting of the center of gravity of the lens. It makes working on gimbals and other stabilizers easier.

A closed construction without any extendable tube is more difficult to assemble, so it was a kind of surprise that the new model features in its optical system as many as three elements and five groups less than its predecessor. We also wondered how it would influence the quality of images. We hope that the next chapters will provide an answer – enjoy your lecture!
