8. Vignetting

In the photos, presented below, you can see that the vignetting on an APS-C/DX matrix won’t be practically any problem for the Sigma 50-500 mm OS.

Sigma 50-500 mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM - Vignetting

The measurements confirm it fully. At the shortest focal length and wide open the vignetting reaches just 15% (-0.48 EV) and on stopping down to f/5.6 it decreases to an imperceptible level of 8%. It is even better at a bit longer focal lengths. At 135 mm, the brightness loss in the frame corners is almost invisible even at the maximum aperture, where it amounts to only 12% (-0.37 EV ) and it disappears completely by f/8.0, where it is just 6%. Practically identical situation can be seen at 300 mm, where the vignetting amounts also to 12% at the maximum aperture, then, on stopping down the aperture to f/8.0, it decreases to 5%.

Only at the focal lengths ranging from 400 to 500 mm we get a chance to notice the vignetting. At 400 mm and by f/6.3 the light fall-off in the frame corners reaches 18% (-0.58 EV) but it decreases to an imperceptible level (8%) already by f/8.0. On passing to 500 mm focal length the vignetting at the maximum aperture increases to 24% (-0.79 EV) and is still noticeable by f/8.0 because it amounts to 16% there but it disappears completely by f/11, where it decreases to the level of 7%.
