- solid and compact casing, fitting the body of the camera well,
- very good image quality in the frame centre,
- good image quality on the edge of the frame at longer focal lengths,
- sensibly corrected lateral chromatic aberration,
- slight coma,
- good control of astigmatism,
- appropriate work against bright light,
- fast, silent and accurate autofocus.
Cons:
- too weak image quality on the edge of the frame at 18 mm focal length,
- noticeable longitudinal chromatic aberration,
- significant distortion, visible in RAW files,
- high vignetting in RAW files regardless of the focal length.
The Fujinon XF 18–55 mm f/2.8–4 OIS is a solid lens but, to tell you the truth, I really cannot decide whether it is only so much or that much. On the one hand it features a useful focal range, a sensibly fast aperture and it can generate sharp images in the frame centre. On the other hand in our test it didn’t correct any aberration in a perfect way, having several slip-ups in the meantime; perhaps they weren’t such a big flaws but still.

I would assess this lens much better if not for the results of the Sigma C 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.0 DC Macro OS HSM. The Sigma is undoubtedly more difficult to produce if only for its focal range, which is wider from both sides. What’s more, it also provides you a macro mode substitute. You also shouldn’t forget that the Sigma optics specialists had to correct both the distortion and the vignetting while their Fujinon counterparts shifted that task on to the software of the camera. Both the Sigma and the Fujinon are made in Japan but the Fujinon costs 1000 PLN more. Taking all these factors into account the Fujinon should have defeated the Sigma in all categories apart from the distortion and vignetting which it doesn’t correct by definition. Meanwhile it is just slightly better in one category: the correction of the lateral chromatic aberration
I don’t doubt that the Fujinon’s price tag of 2800 PLN is exaggerated (that much you have to pay for it if you buy it separately, not in a set with a camera). If that lens cost less than 2000 PLN its purchase would make sense. Currently it is the best if you buy it with a body, as, in that case, the extra charge you have to pay for the lens is 1500 PLN - definitely closer to its real value.
