1. Introduction

Full frame f/2.8 lenses which focal length range starts from 28 mm and ends at 70-75 mm were hugely popular in the last decade of the 20th century – every major optics producer had to feature one such model in their line-up. When we entered 21st century, however, such lenses started to be displaced by the 24-70 mm class and literally after several years they disappeared from the primary market.

Tamron was one of few exception to that rule – at that time they very consistently offered the SP AF 28–75 mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO model, a lens very popular and liked for its favourable price/performance ratio.

Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 - Introduction

That consistency didn't stop with the domination of full frame mirrorless cameras- in February 2018 Tamron was the first to offer the 28-75 mm f/2.8 Di III RXD model, designed to cooperate with them. It took the rivals three years to catch up with them but finally, in 2021, the equivalents from Nikon and Sigma were launched. Still this amount of time was enough for Tamron to present a second version of this lens and in September 2021 they launched the Tamron 28–75 mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2, an improved device with a more complex optical construction.
