Lens review

Leica D Summilux 25 mm f/1.4

5 June 2009
Arkadiusz Olech

11. Summary

Pros:
  • very solid workmanship,
  • outstanding frame center picture quality, including the maximum relative aperture,
  • slight chromatic aberration near the maximum aperture,
  • low distortion,
  • good work of focusing mechanism.

Cons:

  • visible vignetting which decrease very slow on stopping down,
  • too high coma,
  • problems with the work against the light in case of higher aperture values.

Exactly as after the Canon 1.4/35 test, we can feel unsatisfied here. We deal with a very expensive lens from the top shelf with the well-known Leica brand-name and still we managed to find a few flaws with it. Vignetting level is high and it was supposed to be non-existent in the Four Thirds system. We didn’t even listed the frame edge sharpness, which is only average overall. Once again, a small sensor was supposed to be a guarantee of a brilliant performance both in the center and on the frame edges.

You shouldn’t forget about the undeniable advantages of this lens, though. One of the highlights is an incredible frame center resolution, almost armour-plated barrel and parameters. The pleasure of using a E-3 camera with the detector stabilization system and a lens with fully useful f/1.4 aperture is really exceptional. You can take loads of fantastic pictures with such a set without the need of additional lamps and practically forgetting all other lenses in your bag. The decision, whether or not the lens is worth the hefty price of almost 800 $ I leave to the discretion of our readers.
