There are a lot of 18-2xx mm class lenses available on the market. Tamron offers as many as three such devices, there are two Sigmas, one Pentax, one Sony and one Nikkor (although, to be honest you must add that Nikon has launched two other lenses in this series lately). Compared to that rich choice the Canon’s offer looks modest - only in August 2008 that company launched the EF-S 18-200 mm IS model. Although the lens features f/5.6 aperture at its long end, quite fast for this class of equipment, surprisingly it doesn’t feature an USM motor. Ultrasonic motors in 18-2xx mm constructions are used by Nikon, Sigma and even Tamron, which has only made a debut in this area. The Canon’s strategy is puzzling - its device has been given a worse start compared to its rivals.

In the avalanche of launches we’ve witnessed lately the EF-S 18–200 mm IS somehow slipped by our tests and, after all, we did test most of its competitors. That’s why we decided to make up for it and, courtesy of the Cyfrowe.pl shop, which lent us the lens, we can present its full test now. Enjoy your reading!
