10. Autofocus

The Canon EF 35 mm f/2.0 IS USM is equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) so its work is noiseless and very fast. Running through the whole scale takes less than 0.4 of a second which is an excellent result. We didn’t notice any significant slowing down, no matter whether we worked in good or poor lighting conditions.

The accuracy of the focusing mechanism is exquisite. The number of autofocus misses in studio conditions didn’t exceed 1% which means the mechanism is practically faultless.

When it comes to the front or back focus tendency we didn’t encounter here any noticeable problems. In the photos below you can see that, while working on 50D the depth of field is shifted a bit behind the target and on 1Ds MkIII it is moved a bit before it but these effects are slight, visible only in the area near the minimum focus distance where the depth is the shallowest. Still, despite demanding parameters, the depth included the proper target. When we started shooting photos from a bigger distance the lens never missed and didn’t demand any microcalibration either.
