7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Coma makes itself felt noticeably only at the wide angle. At 35 mm focal length it becomes already moderate and nearer the longer end – slight. It is a very similar performance to that you could observe in the test of the Nikkor 18-105 mm VR.

The astigmatism understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values amounts to 5% so it is low. It’s worth mentioning here that focal lengths from 18 to 35 mm contribute significantly more to this value than 70-140 mm focal lengths.

You should also praise the appearance of images out of focus. The circles created by defocused light points show an even spread; only an increased intensity of the rim you see on the very edge is something you can complain about.
