10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an HSM autofocus motor so its work during the focusing is very silent. Still its speed doesn’t bowl us over. Running through the whole distance range and confirming the position takes almost one second. The time needed is even minimally longer at the maximum focal length and there the lens gets lost most often.

Still you have to remember there is a focus limiter, shortening the range. If you choose the option from 10 meters to infinity it will allow you to shorten the focusing time to about 0.5 of a second.

When it comes to the accuracy of the mechanism it was beyond reproach in a range from 150 to 300 mm. At the longer focal end there were mistakes but their number in studio conditions didn’t exceed 4%.

The lens didn’t have any noticeable front or back focus tendencies and didn’t need any microcalibration either on the 50D or the 5D Mark III.
