3. Build quality

The Canon 24-85 mm has quite a complex construction with 15 lenses set up in 12 groups. One of these is an aspheric element. The body is very solid and is equipped with metal threading. The lens is also equipped with a USM motor, which makes the zooming fast and quiet.

In spite of its complicated optical construction and solid build, the lens is neither big nor heavy. The lens (in folded position) is 70mm long and weighs 380 grams. A comparison of the lens with the two Sigmas (17-70mm and 18-50mm) can be observed in the pictures below.

The lens’s aperture values range from 3.5 to 4.5 . The 3.5 value can be reached only up to 30mm focal length, 4.0 to 49mm and then we are left with the 4.5.
