Samyang XP 14 mm f/2.4

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

On the smaller APS-C/DX sensor the coma won’t be problematic at all. In corners of full frame there are some problems as the diode becomes distinctly comma-shaped. The level of that aberration is perhaps not very high but still the new Samyang fares here worse than its slower predecessor. The results of the Irix were similar and the performance of the Canon EF 2.8/14 II was the weakest in this group.

The photos of night sky provide similar images. Once again on the edge of full frame you see distinct deformations of stars which are shaped like the diode we described earlier.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 6.9% so was moderate. Still it’s worth noticing that the results of the Samyang 2.8/14 and the Irix 2.4/15 were a bit better.

When it comes to out-of-focus images the performance of the lens was quite sensible for an instrument with such parameters. The light spread in the circles was more or less even but the brighter ring on the very edge sometimes became rather pronounced.
