Fujifilm Fujinon XF 8-16 mm f/2.8 R LM WR

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Fujinon 8–16 mm is not coma free and photos below prove that much. The aberration seems to be the most pronounced at the shortest focal length but even in the 12-16 mm range the image of the diode in the frame corner remains slightly deformed.

Despite the unpredictable November weather conditions we managed to take the Fujinon 8-16 mm out and shot several pictures of night sky on both ends of focal range. They allow us to see the coma effect in stars images - also in this case its influence is noticeable.

When it comes to astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, it amounted to 7.6%. It is a moderate result, nothing to worry about. It also should be mentioned that value is an average one, reached at all focal lengths and near the maximum relative aperture. If you start to analyze it more meticulously you can indicate that the majority of problems you’ll get at 8 mm and by f/2.8, where that aberration gets near a very high level of over 20%.

Out-of-focus images provided by the Fujinon 8-16 mm are hardly impressive. The circles feature lighter borders, distinct onion rings (as many as four aspherical elements make themselves felt here) and they are deformed in the frame corners. It should be mentioned, though, that nice, smooth and creamy bokeh is not a feature you expect from a lens providing the angle of view of over 120 degrees.
