1. Introduction

Most of us plan ahead of time. There are some who even compose timetables with different actions, prognosed incomes and outcomes, and trips planned for even distant future. Such a trend concerns both ordinary people who just want to organize better their private and business life and also different companies, big and small, up to the biggest and most powerful corporations. Still life can write the strangest scenarios – in other words you can always be given the classic Taleb's black swan. In 2020 the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic became such an unpredictable event.

The COVID-19 and, connected to it, the lockdown of businesses and individuals, has been a source of big changes on the photooptical market. There have been segments which crashed spectacularly in a very short period of time and there have been others that, at the same time, thrived beyond belief. For example without weddings, mass events, fashion shows, press conferences, concerts, different movie events and such the demand for studio and journalistic lenses decreased noticeably.

On the other hand people who had fleed the cities and gone to the country started to rediscover the beauty of nature. Accordingly, binoculars, spotting scopes, microscopes, and inverting telescopes have been disappearing from shop shelves; the same could be said about telephoto and macro lenses. Some companies dealing with the latter have seen an increase in demand of over 100%.

Sigma A 105 mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro - Introduction

It happens that the macro segment has always been a strong point of the Sigma company. Still, their offer could be described as rich only in the case of reflex cameras, as it included 50, 70, 105, 150, and 180 mm models. The mirrorless optics sector seemed to be distinctly neglected. First lenses designed for mirrorless cameras and produced by this Japanese manufacturer were launched in 2012 and then, during eight long years, we didn't see one single macro lens for mirrorless systems. It is a surprising fact, especially if you realize that in the Sony FE system, in which Sigma managers have engaged themselves the most, the macro segment has also been neglected by the Sony company. So far, they have presented just one lens, the Sony FE 90 mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS.

Nowadays the line-up of optics designed for the Sony FE system is really impressive but its macro segment seems to be really underrepresented. It's obvious Sigma have added two and two together and decided to show a new lens of that class, the Sigma A 105 mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro in two versions, with the Sony FE mount and with the L-mount/Leica-SL.

Courtesy of K-Consult, the official distributor of Sigma products in Poland, one of first production specimens of that lens was sent to our editorial office and now we can share with our Readers the full test of this lens – enjoy!
