6. Distortion

If you want to find a feature that distinguish the Viltrox 1.8/50 from older gauss constructions it's distortion correction. In this category you can finally notice the greater potential of 11 elements because older and simpler optical systems with a similar focal length have had deformations reaching even -2%.

In the case of the Viltrox there will be no problems with distortion whatsoever. On the smaller APS-C/DX sensor you deal with a negligible result of -0.17%, being in accordance with zero within the boundaries of measuring error.

On full frame the result is a bit higher and it changes sign. You deal here with pincushion distortion of +0.45% but, once again, such a value shouldn't worry you at all.

You shouldn't be surprised by the fact that distortion on the smaller sensor is negative and on the bigger – positive. Firstly, the result reached on the smaller detector, within the margin of measuring error, typically amounting to 0.2%, is also in accordance with a positive result. Secondly, the change of the size of the detector means also a change of distance between the lens and its aim. The Viltrox is a closed construction lens, it focuses by shifting positions of elements inside. It means distortion can be different when it comes to different distances from the aim. Still, it is important distortion is corrected properly - its values, depending on distances, stay very close to the zero level. In this category the tested lens should be definitely praised.
