1. Introduction

In April and September 2020 Viltrox, the Chinese optics producer, launched as many as three prime f/1.4 lenses designed for mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors. We think here about the 1.4/23, the 1.4/33, and the 1.4/56 models; the first of them we've already managed to test and we had only good things to say about its performance.

Not long after the Viltrox launches the Japanese Tokina showed their new primes with the same aperture and focal length values. One glance at the following chart and you know it's a classic case of rebranding. The new Tokinas feature almost exactly the same parameters as the Viltrox lenses.

We wondered about the reasons behind the Tokina's decision, after all a renowned Japanese producer. Why did they decide to sell products of a relatively new Chinese company under their own brand name? After all Viltrox proved that they can produce good lenses, like the 1.4/23, but also bad ones, like the 1.8/50 model,  tested by us not so long ago.

In order to form our own opinion we wanted to check one of the Tokina new models and their Polish distributor, the Next77 company, managed to deliver us the Tokina ATX-M 33 mm f/1.4 X very quickly.
