Nikon Nikkor Z 26 mm f/2.8

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

It's time to present another big compromise – the coma performance. It is really interesting that coma explodes very violently in the very corners of the frame. When it comes to the APS-C/DX sensor the lens still fares exceedingly well, presenting almost point-like diode images. However, when you pass to the corners of full frame, deformations are huge. Fortunately stopping down the aperture by 1 EV allows you to decrease this aberration distinctly.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounted to 4.8% and it is a low value. It seems here the Nikkor performs even better than in the case of coma.

When it comes to out-of-focus areas it wasn't that easy. After all you deal here with a wide angle lens which construction features as many as three aspherical elements. It makes itself felt – the onion-ring bokeh is quite pronounced. As a consolation you can enjoy a sensible performance of mechanical vignetting. Due to the significant diamenter of the mount even such a small lens as this one doesn't have any problems – its mechanical vignetting disappears completely on stopping down the aperture by 2 EV.
