1. Introduction

There are many ultra-wide zoom lenses in the full frame Sony FE system so its users might feel pampered. They could choose between two 12-24 mm models, one as fast as f/2.8 and other a bit slower, f/4.0, and also two 16-35 mm class lenses with the same aperture values.

In case of the slower 16-35 mm model Sony decided to cooperate with Zeiss – as a result in 2014 they presented the Sony Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35 mm f/4 ZA OSS. It is a big lens – its dimensions are 98.5 x 78 mm and it weighs 518 grams.

From some time Sony have been launching revamped versions of their flagship instruments and that's what happened to the 16-35 mm f/4.0 model as well - on 22 of March 2022 a new version of that lens was shown to the wider public. This time the lens is produced uniquely by Sony and they managed to limit both the weight and physical dimensions of the new product. You deal with a tiny device that profits to the full from the fact that the lack of mirror chamber opens a vista of possibilities.
