Cons: Price. No ArcaSwiss profile foot, (but RRS does a very nice aftermarket foot.)
Pros: Sharp! As sharp as my EF500 f4 IS L Mk1 at the same distance, i.e. frame cropped to same image size. Accepts TC 1.4 II without loss of sharpness. TC 2.0 II also sharp but AF slower. Coupled with 5DsR it tops the DXO sharpness test league table & this is reflected in field use. IS is markedly superior to EF500. Light weight for same image quality of using larger telephoto . Short minimum focus distance 2.5m.
Summary: I bought it specifically for wildlife work as it was more airline friendly than EF500 & more agile, especially for use at night. An utter delight to use & not the one-trick-pony I feared.

Cons: price - that's the only shortcoming I can detect. maybe the light shade could be a bit smaller for saving packing space but for that purpose I am building my own light shade
Pros: sharp wide open - even in the corner of the frame excellent AF speed on my 5D II - fastest AF of all lenses I've ever tested gorgeous bokeh - very smooth and extremely pleasing - comparable to the 135 f/2.0 lightweight compare to all other options in the market - especially compare to the predecessor and the 120-300 Sigma or the Nikon pennant compact and fits into my photobag - good for traveling
Summary: I was looking to an optically and mechanically optimized lens with a large aperture and multipurpose usability. Combined with the 1.4x and 2x extenders this lens plays in his own class. Even with the 2x Extender it is razor sharp. If you want an lens with no compromises this is the one to go for - or its sibling the 400 f/2.8 which is heavier and bigger and more expensive. the 300 f/2.8 II is as good as it gets today and maybe for the coming decades. A joy to use and surely a good investment if you look at the used prices of it's predecessor which are selling now more expensive then their purchasing price 10 years ago (not a bad thing)
