In September 2007, along with an A700 reflex camera, a Sony DT 16-105 MM F/3.5-5.6 lens hit shop shelves. I must admit I was very surprised by this launch. Sony, with the support of Zeiss, Tamron and also Minolta products which had been on the market even before, all of a sudden started to construct its optical system anew. The reasons behind this decision are difficult to guess why the heads of this company decided to launch a product that mostly duplicates the range and the functions of a very well-done Zeiss 16-80 mm f/3.5-4.5 lens, which test we have had a big pleasure to publish recently. It is even more difficult to understand when you take into account the fact that the users of that system lack, say, a 17-50 mm class device with the aperture of f/2.8, not to mention other shortages.

Will this intersystemic duel between a 16-105 and a 16-80 mm models do the company anything good? Perhaps Sony wanted to show their ability to manufacture a universal lens, with no equivalent in any other system? It’s not our task to decide anyway. However, we can with clear conscience compare both lenses and try to help our Readers in choosing a better one.
