Leica Apo-Summicron-M 75 mm f/2.0 Asph

18 June 2010
Arkadiusz Olech

11. Summary

Pros:
  • sensational build quality,
  • excellent image quality in the centre of the field of view starting right from the maximum relative aperture,
  • very low chromatic aberration,
  • negligible distortion,
  • slight coma,
  • well-corrected astigmatism,
  • sensibly low vignetting which disappears completely on slight stopping down,
  • good work against bright light.

Cons:

  • too „soft” at the edge of the frame by f/2.0 –f/2.8,
  • very high price.

Everybody knows perfectly well that Leica values its products very highly. Although the 2/75 model is not the most expensive in theSummicron series, it is also not the cheapest one and you must admit that the sum of over 3400 $ might make you weak at the knees. Do we really get in return something that we won’t find in other systems? In some sense yes, because a better performance hasn’t been seen for any of f/1.8–2.0 lenses, with the focal length ranging from 70 mm to 80 mm, tested by us so far. The problem is that when we compare the Leica with the Pentax 1.8/77 we won’t see big differences, either when it comes to the optics or the build quality. The Leica is three times as expensive as the Pentax. Is this price difference just caused by the Leica legend? Partially it is certainly the case, but it’s not the end of the story. You must remember one important thing. The optical and mechanical quality of a lens (or any other optical instrument for that matter) at the beginning increases very steeply with its price. When you move to higher levels, though, this increase slows down significantly. In the highest price/quality segment of the market the, say, 10% improvement of performance often entails the increase of the price by two or even three times. That’s the way it is. Certainly some people will decide that these 10% are worth paying extra money, even if it is a very large sum; some will consider it an unnecessary expense, though.

Sample shots

For some reasons we were able to post just a small amount of sample photos taken with this lens (especially not one single photo at f/2.0). When the first opportunity occurs, we will try to complement our photos gallery, adding new shots.
