10. Autofocus

To all intends and purposes the autofocus in this lens can be treated just as a gadget. The combination of such parameters and the small 4/3 sensor makes the depth of field really huge. For example if you use f/4.0 aperture you can set the focus at the distance of 3.3 meters and enjoy sharp images from 1.7 meters to infinity.

The second factor, which makes writing about the autofocus in this test really redundant, is the fact that we deal here with a mirrorless device which sets focus by applying contrast detection; in fact it’s the body which is responsible for it completely and the speed or accuracy depend on it.

As we already started talking about the speed we can mention that focusing in the case of the tested equipment is not the quickest process at all. The lens-plus-camera set first goes near the right position, then passes it, then goes backwards and finally the focus is set. The whole process can take less than one second. What’s more during the work you can hear a quiet whirr.

What’s interesting, the Panasonic 2.5/14 on the Olympus E-PL1 showed a distinct front focus as you can see in the photo below. Fortunately the depth of field is so huge that even with that front focus the photographed object managed to fit in and remained sharp. When we photograph objects positioned further away than our autofocus chart, which was put almost in the distance of minimum focus, the problem becomes even more negligible.
