The age of digital cameras without a mirror (also known as mirrorless devices - they don’t include the rang finder cameras) was started by Panasonic – in September 2008 that company presented to the world the first camera of this type, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1. The Micro Four Thirds system, to which this model belongs, is the oldest on the market; small wonder it also features the widest choice of lenses. The mutual compatibility of Olympus and Panasonic lenses is another contributing factor here.

It’s worth emphasizing that the latter company is supported by the experience of Leica when it comes to optics production – they have been cooperating in the production of compact cameras lenses and exchangeable optics as well. It’s enough to remind here the models we’ve tested so far: the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14–50 mm f/2.8–3.5 Asph. Mega O.I.S. and the Leica D Summilux 25 mm f/1.4, both designed for 4/3 system reflex cameras.

It is interesting that at one point these lenses disappeared from the shelves completely; it was the source of rumours that Leica wouldn’t cooperate with Panasonic any longer and wouldn’t produce any exchangeable optics for that company. The gossip was contradicted by the launch of the Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S in September 2009. With this launch the Micro 4/3 system became the first mirrorless system featuring a dedicated Macro lens.

We would like to thank the Panasonic Poland company for lending the lens for our tests.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
