Lens review

Sony DT 16-50 mm f/2.8 SSM

10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic SSM motor – small wonder it works very silently. The focusing speed is also nothing you can complain about because running through the whole scale takes just 0.5-0.6 of a second, a very good result.

Some reservations you can have when it comes to the accuracy of the focusing mechanism because it is hardly perfect. The number of misses in studio conditions reached 9% which is perhaps not an especially alarming value but also a bit too high for a ready-to-use, retail set of a camera and a lens.

The 16-50 mm f/2.8 lens attached to the A77 body shows some slight tendency to front focus. That tendency was visible only when we took photos from a close distance. The objects situated further away fitted the depth of field without any problems in most of cases.
