Sigma 19 mm f/2.8 EX DN

10. Autofocus

The Sigma 19 mm f/2.8 EX DN is equipped with a linear autofocus motor. According to the representatives of this company that device exactly is responsible for a gentle rattle you hear when you shake the detached lens. When you attach it to a camera, you can hear it no more.

The focusing mechanism works silently and smoothly. Its speed is beyond reproach because even in poor lightning conditions running through the whole distance scale takes not more than 0.5 of a second. We don’t have any reservations concerning the accuracy. It is difficult to say whether it is due to a significant depth of field or the efficiency of the focusing mechanism itself but overall the result is very good – in studio conditions the lens didn’t miss one single time.

In the case of the Olympus E-PL1 the focus was always set properly. After attaching the lens to the Sony NEX-7 a small front focus tendency made itself felt. It was so slight, though, that it was visible just when taking photos from small distances.
