10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus motor which, in the case of the Nikon company, is marked with SWM letters (Silent Wave Motor). The name of the mechanism describes its properties rather well because its work is really very quiet. It would be difficult to complain here about anything.

The autofocus speed can be criticized a bit though. Running through the whole distance scale takes about one second (no matter from what end you start, the result is similar) and it doesn’t depend either on the focal length value or on the conditions. Such a result is far from the performance of other fixed-focal journalistic zoom lenses with f/2.8 aperture.

Fortunately there are no reservations concerning the accuracy of the focusing mechanism. The lens attached to the Nikon D3x practically never missed at all. We also didn’t observe any distinct front or back focus tendency.
