1. Introduction

You can literally pick and choose among different 100 mm f/2.8 macro lenses. What’s more, the majority of those are very good, efficient constructions, offering you a very good image quality up from the maximum relative aperture. The following chart presents several such instruments.

The competition is fierce; small wonder there are companies which try to offer something original and special. The Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 100 MM f/2.0 can be a good example of that trend – it provides 1:2, not 1:1 image ratio, setting the focus already from 0.44 of a meter. On the other hand it features a noticeably faster aperture than a typical macro lens which, joined with the 100 mm focal length, allows you to use it successfully for portraits and on both types of detectors (APS-C and FF).

Keeping in mind overall good performance of 2.8/100 class lenses and the latest resolution records of the Zeiss 2/135 and the 1.4/50 Otus I admit our expectations concerning the Makro-Planar 2/100 were high. Did it fare well enough not to disappoint us? Find out in the next chapters – happy reading!
