6. Distortion

In case of one part of Fujifilm X system lenses the optics designers gave up the distortion correction completely, letting the camera software deal with that task. When it comes to the 16-50 mm model they gave it up so thoroughly that at the wide angle the distortion level, measured in RAW files, is simply monstrous, amounting to as much as –8.52%. Additionally there are traces of moustache distortion as well. It is a kind of negative record in this category of lenses…

The software of the camera is not able to eliminate that aberration completely so, at the wide angle, even in JPEG files, you have to take into account −1.86% of barrel distortion.

In the middle of the focal range the situation is much better though. In RAW files the distortion is –1.55% and in JPEG it gets to –0.71%.

With the further increase of the focal length that aberration decreases, changes the sign and, at 50 mm you deal with its pincushion form. In RAW files it is as high as +0.35% and in JPEG it amounts to +0.33%.
