10. Autofocus

The Tokina 70–200 mm is equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus motor so its mechanism is really silent. The only sound you hear is a slight whirr of moving elements. The speed is not impressive, though. Running through the whole distance scale and finding a focus takes about one second. The rivals not only can focus faster but offer focus limiters as well.

The autofocus is perhaps not the quickest but, what’s important, it is very accurate. The number of misses in studio conditions didn’t exceed 1% so the performance of the autofocus mechanism we assess very positively.

Attached to both bodies, used in our test, the Tokina showed slight back focus tendency. The autofocus microregulation on a level of five units made that problem disappear, though.
