Nikon Nikkor AF-S DX 16-80 mm f/2.8-4E ED VR

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The tested lens doesn’t manage coma very well. Its level is distinct in the 16-30 mm range, then it decreases slightly but remains quite bothersome at 50 mm and only at the maximum focal length it becomes slight. This is not a performance you would expect from a good quality lens.

The astigmatism, understood as an average difference between vertical and horizontal MTF50 function values, amounts to 4.4% so it can be called low. It’s worth mentioning here that with the increase of the focal length you can notice a slight increase of astigmatism too. At 16 mm it reaches just 2.5% but at 80 mm it gets to 6.8%.

Out-of-focus images look sensibly well for a zoom lens but only that much can be said here. The circles of light presented below don’t match. You see a distinct “doughnut” in the centre and a rim on the edge which becomes more and more intensive on stopping down the aperture.
