10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the tested lens is neither noiseless nor fast. When it works you can hear a slight whirr. It is not something bothersome or annoying but it is perfectly audible.

Running through the whole distance scale and finding the focus takes about one second. Taking into account the fact that the scale turns through an angle of about 90 degrees this performance is nothing exceptional or impressive.

What’s more, when we were taking our sample shots we had to deal with an interesting problem. At one point the autofocus simply froze. Switching the camera on and off didn’t help - we couldn’t shift the ring from the AF to the MF position. It got stuck and we were afraid to force it in order not to damage the borrowed lens. Only detaching the lens from the camera helped – after it was reattached it worked properly well. Mind you such a situation happened just once.

We don’t have any reservations concerning the accuracy of the focusing mechanism. There were 72% of ‘spot-on shots’ (so those which MTFs didn’t differ more than 10% from the best result). Evident misses so photos with the resolution worse by more than 20% from the best shot constituted 4% of all. It is a sensible result.

When it comes to any front or back focus tendencies we observed the latter effect. It was constant for all focal lengths and you could eliminated it by setting the autofocus microadjustment at 7-8 units.
